Department of Homeland Security Investigating Yesterday’s Cyber Attack

Yesterday, major websites and services became victims of a well-coordinated cyber attack including PlayStation Network, Netflix, Twitter, Reddit and Spotify among a plethora of others. Internet performance management company, Dyn, posted a preliminary report of the incident on its website, revealing that there were several attacks, with the first one starting at approximately 11:10 UTC. Later speaking to CNBC, Dyn revealed that the attacks came from “tens of millions of IP addresses at the same time,” which the news channel says are now being investigated by the Department of Homeland Security.
At present, the officials don’t think it was a state-sponsored attack, with Dyn believing that it came from devices, such as printers and DVRs, connected to the internet. Apparently, these devices are infected by malware that was recently released online. “What they’re actually doing is moving around the world with each attack,” said Chief Strategy Officer Kyle York while engineers were still mitigating the issue. For those who are interested, Dyn’s preliminary report can be found here.
