It’s been about 7 months since the fine folks at Spiderweb Software successfully crowdfunded their latest project, a game called Geneforge 1 ? Mutagen. We talked about this one in February, and we told you how this is actually a remastering of a game called Geneforge that Spiderweb originally released way back in 2001. It centered around wizards known as Shapers who could create life at will and then send those creations out to do their bidding for them. All creatures created by the Shapers are expected to obey or be destroyed, but sometimes the creatures end up being a little bit smarter than anyone anticipated, so you’ll need to keep a watchful eye on them lest they turn against you.
As with most of Spiderweb’s games there is a morality angle here, as well as an extremely open-ended path towards victory, whatever you deem victory to even be. As the developers describe Geneforge, “Choose between a host of rival factions. Use magic or your deadly pets to crush your enemies. Or, use trickery, diplomacy, and stealth to win the game without ever attacking a foe. Destroy the final boss, or switch sides and join him. Fight alone or create your own army of custom-made mutant monsters." Here is a brand new trailer showing off Geneforge 1 – Mutagen.
