Is Facebook Bringing Back Rooms App as Part of Messenger"
Is Facebook?s shuttered stand-alone Rooms application coming back to life as part of Messenger"
The social network introduced Rooms in October 2014, saying at the time that it was intended to bring users together to discuss topics of their choice with text, photos and videos, and without having to use their real names.
However, those Rooms were clearly not crowded enough, as the app was shelved in December 2015, along with fellow Facebook Creative Labs efforts Slingshot and Riff.
?Developer evangelist? Chris Messina shared the following references to a Rooms feature that he discovered within the source code for Messenger with Josh Constine of TechCrunch:
?Introducing rooms.?
?Rooms are for public conversations about topics and interests. Each room has a link that can be shared so anyone on Messenger can join the conversation.? ?View room.?
?Start your first room about a topic or event that you?re interested in.?
?This will remove you as the host and other members will be able to manage the room. You will no longer receive new messages.?
TechCrunch reader Hoan Do then shared the screenshots below with Constine, showing the Rooms features in actions and highlighting elements including joining Rooms, chatting with users (friends and non-friends), managing Rooms and sharing Rooms.
Constine said Facebook initially declined to comment, but the company then told him:
We often run small tests–nothing else to share beyond that.
