Reports first surfaced in May that certain types of media attachments would ?soon? no longer count toward Twitter?s 140-character limit, and now it appears that ?soon? is Sept. 19.
The Verge reported that starting Sept. 19, media attachments?photos/images, GIFs, videos, polls?and quoted tweets will no longer count against the 140-character limit.
Twitter did not confirm the date to The Verge, but ?two sources familiar with the company?s business? did, cautioning that the date could still change.
Bloomberg first reported the possibility of the move in May.
When Twitter reported its second-quarter-2016 earnings in July, its letter to shareholders said: We?re continuing to give people more ways to express themselves in a tweet. In May, we announced upcoming changes to simplify tweets?including what counts toward your 140 characters. For instance, @names in replies and media attachments (like photos, GIFs and videos) will no longer ?use up? valuable characters. We?re giving developers time to prepare for these changes and expect to launch in the fall. Simplifying these rules will help people express themselves more easily without compromising the brevity and speed that makes Twitter unique.
