Chief operating officer Sheryl Sandberg didn?t leave Facebook for Disney, or to run for public office, and she said Tuesday that she?s not leaving the social network for a cabinet position, either.
At the Internet Association?s Virtuous Circle conference in Menlo Park, Calif., Tuesday, Sandberg addressed speculation that she would serve as secretary of the Treasury or secretary of commerce if Hillary Clinton wins the presidency.
Tony Romm of Politico reported that Sandberg said during a fireside chat at the event:
I?m staying at Facebook. I really am staying at Facebook. I?m very happy.
I think the issues we?re here to talk about, which are issues around policy, matter. The government matters. I don?t have a job in the private sector thinking government doesn?t matter; it does. Sandberg does have some experience in Washington, D.C., having served as chief of staff for former President Bill Clinton?s secretary of the Treasury, Larry Summers, prior to joining Google, where she worked before Facebook.
In March 2014, rumors swirled that Sandberg was a potential replacement for Disney CEO Bob Iger, who announced at that time that he was leaving the company in 2016.
Then in April 2014, Sandberg responded to rumors that the reason why she sold off several large parcels of Facebook stock was to prepare to run for a political office, saying on NBC?s Today:
