Nintendo announced an official release date for Super Mario Run, its upcoming running game that was revealed in September.
Super Mario Run will launch for free on iPhone and iPad Dec. 15. Users will be able to try the game for free, and they will be able to unlock all of the game’s content via a one-time in-app purchase of $9.99.
Super Mario Run will feature three gameplay modes. In the single-player gameplay mode, users will be challenged to complete timed courses by helping Mario reach the flag pole at the end of each course before running out of time. Mario will run automatically, and players will be able to tap to make him jump over obstacles, defeat or avoid enemies and collect coins.
Outside of this gameplay mode, a battle mode will allow users to race against the “ghosts” of other players. Specifically, in each race, players will have a limited amount of time to make it as far as possible in a course while collecting coins and impressing Toads characters. Finally, each player will be able to create their own Mushroom Kingdom as they progress.
In a statement, Doug Bowser, senior vice president of sales and marketing at Nintendo of America, commented:
