YouTube Announces #voteIRL ‘Get Out the Vote’ Campaign
YouTube announced its “get out the vote” campaign for the 2016 U.S. election season. The campaign is called #voteIRL, and it will see popular YouTube creators publish videos encouraging their viewers to register to vote.
YouTube said it gathered a group of users together and registered to vote in all 50 states, and it determined that it takes one minute and 34 seconds, on average, to register to vote. With this number in mind, creators will publish 1:34 videos in which they complete other tasks (such as doing their eyebrows) while encouraging their viewers to register to vote.
In addition, users will be able to find voter registration tools on YouTube. Users will see registration reminders on the YouTube homepage, watch page and search results page Sept. 27, Voter Registration Day.
Finally, YouTube announced that it will livestream the 2016 presidential debates from multiple news organizations, including PBS, The Washington Post, Bloomberg Television and Telemundo. In addition, YouTube creators including The Young Turks and Complex News will use YouTube Live to publish content while at the debates.
