Somerville Chronicles A Hauntingly Atmospheric Alien Invasion
Somerville may be following the well-trodden path of humanity's fight against an alien invasion, but it's not the narrative you might typically expect. Mankind already won. The battle is stuff of textbooks and school lessons for a new generation. The game presents its narrative of invasion and resistance through the lens of a teacher teaching a class the story of the war hero John Somerville.
The actual horrors of mankind's battle for survival may have faded from the story as told in history books, but the player will experience John's fight in the form of an episodic cinematic platformer.
Somerville combines a stylized-poly look with an atmospheric aesthetic of sky-filling monoliths, alien drones, and wind-swept trees. Developer Chris Olsen has been working on the game since late 2014, starting from early prototypes to the current prologue that introduces John to a world under attack. The visuals are striking: massive vessels looming in the night sky unleashing searing beams of energy, alien drones scouring the shadowy forests, a ruined church with a dead paratrooper hanging from the roof, his tangled parachute flapping in the breeze.
However, visuals and atmosphere aren't the game's only highlights. Cinematic platforming action will see John leaping and fleeing from pursing drones, hiding from alien searchlights, and using weapons and equipment found throughout his journey to fight the invaders. Combat blends modern shooting with a rhythm game-esque mechanic...
