IGN Announces It Has Acquired Humble Bundle
In a somewhat surprising bit of news today, IGN has announced that they have acquired Humble Bundle, the company best known for selling packs of games at pay-what-you-want prices.
While terms of the deal were not disclosed, this is still a fairly shocking announcement, especially when taken into account that Humble has expanded out of the market of selling games and into that of publishing them. For some time, Humble Bundle has been publishing games, paying developers to make them and also maintaining a subscription-based online game service.
According to the official press release confirming the deal, it was said that Humble will continue to operate as its own independent entity despite the acquisition. No staffing or business changes will take place, but Humble will receive some support from IGN in accelerating growth and raising money. “If it’s not broken, don’t fix it,” said Mitch Galbraith – IGN executive VP – who explained that IGN started looking to make a deal like this nearly a year ago. “The idea is just to feed them with the resources they need to keep doing what they’re doing.” “We want to stick to the fundamentals in the short term. We don’t want to disrupt anything we’re doing right already,” added John Graham, the Humble Bundle cofounder. “Because of the shared vision and overlap of our customer bases, there?s going to be a lot of opportunities.”
