Respawn Considers Titanfall 2 a New IP, Explains Why PC Players Were Left Out of Multiplayer Test
Although Titanfall 2 is a sequel to the original, the studio has said that it’s treating the upcoming game as a new IP. Speaking to MCV, COO Dusty Welch said that the “2” in the title “signifies the dual elements of Titan and Pilot, and the single player and multiplayer.” He also said:
We?re really excited to welcome back that original Xbox One, 360 and PC audience. But Titanfall 2 is really a new IP at launch if you think about it. The Xbox One install base is two or three times what it was when Titanfall launched, the PC audience continues to grow. Then there?s the PS4 install base, which is enormous.
Art Director, Joel Emslie, added that Titanfall 2 “stands alone” and reaches out to a new community who will get their hands on it for the first time. In a separate interview with Polygon, Respawn’s Drew McCoy said that one of the many reasons PC players are being left out of the multiplayer test this weekend is because of their ability to dig out spoilers from the game’s files, which is a “very real problem.” Although datamining isn’t impossible on consoles, it’s a relatively easy task for PC players who have in the past unearthed a ton of information from the original Titanfall‘s files. McCoy added:
We?ve spent enough time crafting a game that we want to have surprises that we didn?t want to spoil. All it takes is literally finding a couple words in some files that we missed and...
