SuperData: Digital Games Market Grew 15% in October, Single-Player Games “Still Have Legs”
A new SuperData report has revealed that the worldwide digital games market grew by 15 percent this October as players spent $8.5 billion across console, mobile and PC. This is up from $7.4 billion spent in October 2016.
PC and mobile are the biggest contributors to digital growth but games like FIFA 18 and Grand Theft Auto V (GTA Online) remain popular on consoles as well, raking in significant digital revenue.
SuperData claims that while multiplayer games are in the spotlight, it’s not all doom and gloom for single-player games as they “still have legs.” In October, South Park: The Fractured but Whole, Middle Earth: Shadow of War, and Assassin?s Creed: Origins collectively generated more than $160 million through digital full game sales. However, SuperData doesn’t expect either of these games to enjoy long-term success because single-player games are “harder to monetize through microtransactions.” Elsewhere in the report, we’re told that PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds and Fortnite are engaged in a tight competition. Fortnite Battle Royale’s monthly active userbase grew larger than PUBG‘s during the month of October but Fortnite is raking in only a fraction of the revenue that PUBG generates due to Epic’s title being free-to-play.
Here are October’s top 10 games on console (digital):
FIFA 18
Middle-Earth: Shadow of War
Destiny 2
Grand Theft Auto V
Assassin?s Creed Origins
NBA 2k18
Forza Motors...
