TGS 2016: Square Enix Announces New 'King's Knight' Game, 'King's Knight: Wrath of the Dark Dragon'



Thanks to the Final Fantasy series, Square is a household name among gamers of all ages. There was a time, however, that they were relatively unknown, struggling to find anything that would stick in a highly competitive video game market. It was in that time that they released an NES game called King's Knight. Originally released in Japan in 1986 with a later release in North America in 1989, King's Knight was an odd vertical shoot-em-up with a thick coat of medieval fantasy painted over it. Mild RPG mechanics and a weird multi-plane playing field helped it stand out from the pack, but on the whole, it wasn't a very good game and was soon forgotten.

Until today, apparently. Announced as yet another spin-off of the Final Fantasy 15 universe, King's Knight: Wrath of the Dark Dragon brings the cast of the original game back for another adventure, this time in a fully polygonal world. Yes, Ray Jack the Knight, Kid Thief Toby, and even the monster Barusa have returned. The stupid wizard guy, too. With them comes a huge cast of new characters that looks positively ripe for some social RPG-style gatcha shenanigans. While the trailer doesn't have a ton of information to go on, the game looks to have a multiplayer mode and is almost certainly going to be free-to-play.
