TGS 2019: Hands-On With Quirky Sandbox Game ‘Boku Boku’



While the Indie Corner of the Tokyo Game Show has seen a bounty of interesting mobile titles in recent years, this year things had decidedly Switched to another system. There were a few interesting mobile titles on display, however, even if some of them had already released. Boku Boku (Free) is one such game. While it has been available for quite a while now, the game’s creator has continued to update it and was showing off its latest version at the show. I had never tried it before, but it’s rather interesting and it made for a fun video.
This is a sandbox game where you can create things using blocks. You can also place objects. And you can use those objects to a surprisingly detailed degree. Got a piano" Sit down and play it freely, or choose a song and see if you can hit all the notes in a rhythm-style game. Put down a toilet and you can sit your character on it and paw at the toilet paper roll. Use a broom to clean up, or jump in the air and use it to fly. There are tons of objects and they all have different ways of using them. You can also play multiplayer and interact with other players in fun ways. The creator plopped down a Crocodile Dentist game during the video and we played it just like it was a real toy.
Boku Boku is free to download and appears to monetize through selling candies, which are used to unlock various items and features. I’m not sure how strict it is in that regard, but even if you tossed a few bucks at it, I don̵...
