#DrivingSelfies on Instagram (Infographics)

As if texting wasn?t dangerous enough, some prefer to take it even further, mugging for selfies while driving. Auto Insurance Center examined 70,000 Instagram posts with driving-related hashtags to find out when, where and how often people are posting selfies while operating moving vehicles.
Citing data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the report notes that distracted driving is a serious problem: 660,000 drivers user their smartphones while on the road, nearly 40 percent of which are using mobile and social apps. What?s more, 14 percent of people checking social media while driving are checking Instagram.

Instagram users in California and Nevada posted the most #DrivingSelfies per 100,000 residents, while users in Mississippi and Oklahoma posted the fewest. Drivers in California and Nevada were joined by drivers in Hawaii and Florida in posting as many as 2.5 #DrivingSelfies per 100,000 residents.
#Driving posts on Instagram have exploded over the last five years. In 2011, they were a rare occurrence, but they have become commonplace in 2016. #Driving posts are most common in densely populated, urban areas.
Driving-related posts on Instagram seem to peak on weekends and spike big-time in the spring. While driving posts have increased every year since 2011, there was an 80 percent increase between 2014 and 2015–the largest increase so far. This year, Instagram users have already posted more than one-half of last year?s total.
