Facebook Takes Fake News Fight to Germany

Facebook is extending its efforts to combat fake news to Germany.
The social network announced in December that it was turning to third-party fact-checking organizations to help combat fake news and hoaxes, as well as making it easier for users to report fake news and flag questionable posts.
Speculation that fake news on Facebook affected the recent U.S. presidential election and a federal election due in Germany later this year may have led to this move by Facebook.
Manager of journalism partnerships Áine Kerr announced in a Facebook Media blog post:
Last month we announced some tests to address the issue of fake news on Facebook. In the next few weeks, we?ll be starting to roll out these updates in Germany. We?ll learn from these tests in this region, and iterate and extend them over time. The updates include:

Testing several ways to make it easier for people to report a fake story if they see one on Facebook.
Onboarding third-party fact-checking organizations in Germany that are signatories of Poynter?s International Fact-Checking Code of Principles to help identify fake stories and flag them as disputed in News Feed, including Correctiv and other publishing partners once they apply and are accepted into Poynter?s program.
Disrupting financial incentives for spammers by eliminating the ability for them to spoof well-known news websites and enforcing our existing policies on a more proactive basis.

It?s important to us that the stories you see on Facebook are me...
