Google Maps Adds New Offline Features, Ride Service Options
Google announced the latest updates for Google Maps on iOS and Android.
With this update, if Android users want to save data or are in areas with poor service, they now have the option to turn on WiFi-only mode to use Google Maps entirely offline. Users will need to download areas for offline use in order to use Maps while offline. This offline toggle only affects Google Maps, so users can continue to use other apps and their phones as normal.
In addition, Android users now also have the option to save offline maps to an SD card if their devices support them.
Earlier this year, Google introduced the ability for users to compare trip prices from ride services (like Uber) without leaving Google Maps. Google has now added new ride service options for users in multiple countries. In a blog post, Amanda Bishop, product manager for Google Maps, detailed the additions:
In addition to showing options from Uber, we’re now showing GO-JEK rides in three cities in Indonesia, with 10 more cities coming soon (Android, rolling out on iOS), and Grab rides in 24 cities throughout Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore and Thailand (Android, rolling out on iOS). We’ve also expanded the availability of Gett, Hailo and MyTaxi in select cities across Ireland, Poland, Italy, Austria, Russia and Israel (Android, iOS).
