Instagram Rolls Out Suicide-Prevention Tools

Instagram took a cue from parent company Facebook with its launch of suicide-prevention tools.
The new tools will allow Instagram users to anonymously report when they see posts from friends that hint at self-harm, and those friends will receive messages that read:
Someone saw one of your posts and thinks you might be going through a difficult time. If you need support, we’d like to help.
Those users will also be directed to options that can be accessed via the Instagram application, such as helplines, contacting friends, tips and support.
Users who post about self-injury will also be led to that support page.

With the vast number of teens on Instagram, chief operating officer Marne Levine wisely spoke with Kate Storey of Seventeen, saying: We listen to mental health experts when they tell us that outreach from a loved one can make a real difference for those who may be in distress. At the same time, we understand friends and family often want to offer support but don’t know how best to reach out. These tools are designed to let you know that you are surrounded by a community that cares about you, at a moment when you might most need that reminder.
