Snap Inc. Spectacles Are On Sale, But ?
?Expect the unexpected? is the slogan for CBS reality competition show Big Brother, but it can also be applied to the way Snapchat parent Snap Inc. has handled the introduction and release of its Spectacles.
The company?s sunglasses with built-in video cameras were officially announced in late September in a story for The Wall Street Journal late on a Friday evening, likely due to a leak earlier that day by Business Insider.
Now, Spectacles are officially available to the general public?sort of.
Snap Inc. is making the sunglasses available via vending machines that it calls Snapbots, but before you head out to search for one, these Snapbots will only appear in select locations for one day at a time.
The first Snapbot surfaced in Venice Beach, Calif., and the company provided this map to alert interested potential buyers about the locations of future landings, which will be revealed about 24 hours in advance.
Those lucky enough to find Snapbots will be able to try on virtual Spectacles in the three colors in which they are available?coral, black and teal?and then complete their purchases via credit card and retrieve the sunglasses from the ?mouth? of the Snapbot. Spectacles are delivered fully charged and ready to go.
