PS4 Pro Comes With Extra 1GB of RAM to Free Up More Memory for Developers
Sony’s lead system architect, Mark Cerny, has revealed that the PlayStation 4 Pro will come with an extra 1GB of RAM.
“We felt games needed a little more memory, about 10 percent more, so we added about 1GB of slow, conventional DRAM to the console,” he explained during an interview with IGN. The extra 1GB will be reserved for non-gaming purposes and multitasking which, on the current PS4, use part of the GDDR5 RAM. On the PS4 Pro, when you stop using applications, they’ll be moved to the DRAM, freeing up almost 1GB of the 8GB GDDR5 for developers.
In related news, we’re told that nine of the thirteen titles due to support PS4 Pro will use checkerboard rendering technique, which increases texture details and specular effects. Watch Dogs 2, Mass Effect: Andromeda, Infamous: First Light, Killing Floor 2, Uncharted 4, Days Gone, Call of Duty Infinite Warfare, Rise of the Tomb Raider and Horizon Zero Dawn will all utilize checkerboarding. Cerny revealed tons of other technical details about the PS4 Pro over the past couple of days. In case you’ve missed any, you can find them here.
