Sam Raimi on The Last of Us Movie: They Don’t Want to Move Forward Right Now

Earlier this year, The Last of Us movie writer Neil Druckmann revealed that there hasn’t been any work done “in over a year and a half” and it’s “kind of entered development hell.” For an update on the film, IGN spoke with Sam Raimi, who has been a part of the project since it was confirmed in 2014.
According to Raimi, he went to Druckmann with his Ghost House Pictures production company to get the rights, which they’d then sell but still retain control of. Druckmann then went to Sony, but as Raimi adds, “They have their own plans for it and I think Neil’s plan for it – I’m not trying to be political – Neil’s plan for it is not the same as Sony’s.”
Although Raimi’s a producer on the movie, he can’t do much to help since his company doesn’t have the rights (Druckmann sold his rights to Sony, who hired Raimi as a producer). After mentioning that he’d love to help with the project if Sony and Neil move forward with it, Raimi said he’s still attached, but he doesn’t know what that means: Right now it’s just sitting there. They don’t want to move forward, and it’s not my place to say why, and Neil, I think, is in a slight disagreement with them about how things should go so there’s a standstill. And I don’t have the power to move it.
